Caspar David Friedrich – Masterpieces of Romanticism
Friday, April 19, 2024, 7:00 p.m. with a small reception starting at 6:30 p.m.
At otte1, the former curator of the Kunsthaus Kappeln Dr. Alf Hermann will give a lecture on Caspar David Friedrich, literarily accompanied by quotes from the current bestseller “Zauber der Stille” by Florian Illies, which will be read by Monika von Boetticher.
Hermann will bring his own detailed photographs and fresh impressions from the Friedrich exhibition, which commemorated the 250th birthday of the great German Romantic at the Hamburger Kunsthalle and ended just a few days ago. This special format, organized together with curatorial fellow Nicholé Velásquez, also invites the public to an evening with the new fellows at Otte1.
lllies tells “many amusing and astonishing background stories that bring the artist to life as a highly individual and strange person behind his art”, says Hermann appreciatively, but he himself takes a slightly different approach. He tries to first of all to understand Friedrich’s thoughts and feelings directly from the pictures. The background, insofar as it is known and sufficiently documented, could then provide further information in individual cases and contribute to an understanding of the paintings. In Friedrich’s case, both together lead to an astonishingly clear picture of the artist’s personality, who nevertheless remains enigmatic and continues to inspire us to take a closer look at his paintings and want to explore them even more deeply.
Alf Hermann’s lecture will take place on Friday, April 19, at 7 pm in the Künstlerhaus Otte1 with a small reception starting at 6:30 pm
