Weekly market reverberation: a very close look from far away
On Saturday, September 16 at 12:30 p.m., scholarship recipient Elnaz Seyedi will present a video production of her piece:
a very close look from far away (2017)
for guitar, violoncello and video
Elnaz Seyedi is engaged in calligraphy. In her audiovisual composition a very close look from far away, she undertakes a musical transformation of Persian script. The piece is inspired by a poem by Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980):
I will build a boat
I will launch it into the water
I will move away from this strange earth
During a performance of the composition, the creation of the individual Persian characters of the text is shown in slow motion in a video feed. Synchronously to this, there is a “transfer” into the musical: the lines of the writing become the lines of the pitches. With flowing glissandi and individually placed (tone) dots, the text is written quasi musically on the instruments. What you then hear as a kind of “script melody” has nothing to do with the speech melody or the semantic meaning of the words, and yet in this way a musical atmosphere opens up that also creates access to the content of Sohrab Sepehri’s poem.
Let yourself be inspired.
Admission is free.
