University Society event: Radical Reformation – Religious Fanaticism in 16th-Century Schleswig-Holstein

The Eckernförde branch of the Schleswig-Holstein University Society is hosting a lecture series at the Schleswig-Holstein Artists’ House otte1.

On Wednesday, 15 April 2026 at 7.00 pm, Dr Christian Hoffarth from the Department of History at Kiel University will speak on a topic that may seem distant at first glance, but which, given the current global political situation, is highly relevant today, as it concerns religious fanaticism, as well as ways in which divergent viewpoints can be overcome. The title of his lecture is ‘Radical Reformation: Religious Fanaticism in 16th-Century Schleswig-Holstein’.

Specifically, Hoffarth’s illustrated lecture deals with controversies between the moderate and radical wings of the Reformation in northern Germany. The starting point is the aggressive disputes between the Anabaptist Melchior Hoffman and the Lutheran Marquard Schuldorp, which culminated in the so-called Flensburg Disputation in 1529. The fundamental history of the Reformation in Schleswig-Holstein will also be examined.

The lecture will take place at the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Künstlerhaus otte1, Ottestraße 1, 24340 Eckernförde.
Admission: Non-members €5. Members of all sections, school pupils, students and trainees free
Doors open: from 6.30 pm
